A few years ago I was diagnosed with herniated discs in my lower three lumbar vertebrae, L3, L4, and L5. The pain didn't stop when I lay down at night. It got worse.

Every mattress I tried made things harder. Some were too soft and my lower back would sink in all wrong. Others were too firm and just pushed straight into the problem areas. I was waking up at 2am not able to get comfortable no matter what position I was in. I tried side sleeping, back sleeping, a pillow between my knees, you name it. Nothing worked consistently and I was just exhausted all the time.

The reviews I found online weren't helpful for what I was dealing with. Most of them were written by people rating how a mattress felt in general, not what it does when you actually have something wrong with your back. The best mattress for back pain lists were mostly just paid spots. I couldn't find anything that spoke to my actual situation.

So I spent a few months doing it myself. I went to showrooms, did back to back in-home trials where I could, and kept notes on how each one felt in the morning, whether I could get up without that first wave of pain, where I felt pressure building through the night. It took a long time and cost more money than I would have liked.

I eventually found one that worked. The first morning I woke up without that tight crushing feeling in my lower back I honestly teared up a little. After that I wanted to put together the kind of resource I was looking for when I was going through it, something written by someone who needed a mattress to actually work, not just feel decent for a few minutes in a store.
